This month’s postcard comes from Tokyo, and our focus is on Tokyo’s eclectic bar and cafe scene.
Recently I devoted a few days to sampling as many of the city’s coffee shops and cocktail bars as I could (I know, a hard life), and came away with a few new favorites.
I’ll start with the laid back Little Nap Coffee Stand, a charming but unpretentious coffee shop on a quiet residential street in Yoyogi. Despite its location (just north of Shibuya, west of Harajuku, and south of Shinjuku), a visit to Little Nap will show you how quiet even central Tokyo can be.
Next is High Five, a refined cocktail bar in the heart of the Ginza district. Considered one of the best bars in all of Asia, bartender Hidetsugu Ueno is a legend both for his drinks and ice carving. There’s no menu: staff will ask about your preferences, and a drink is prepared especially for you.
For the best of both worlds—coffee and cocktails—head to the uber-hip Fuglenin Shibuya’s backstreets. During the day enjoy coffee and Scandinavian-inspired snacks and pastries (the original Fuglen is in Oslo; the Tokyo branch is the second location). After 8 p.m. (from Wed to Sun), you can also enjoy cocktails as well as Japanese whisky and craft beer.
This is just a tiny sampling of Tokyo’s best bars and cafes, but I hope you have a chance to visit at least one on your next visit to Tokyo!
The busy spring season has given way to the more relaxed summer season. We don’t see as many travelers to Japan in summer, thanks to the heat and humidity (though personally we love it).
However, if you are thinking about a trip to Japan in October or November, it’s definitely time to begin planning now! It’s a popular time thanks to the beauty of the autumn foliage, and we have already seen some of our favorite hotels sell out for certain dates.
Until Next Time!
Thank you so much for reading. Please feel free to let me know what topics you’d like to see us write about in the future, and we’ll do our best!
