It’s Andres, from Boutique Japan.
This month’s postcard comes from a magical little slice of old-fashioned Tokyo, right in the heart of the frenetic and neon-filled Shibuya neighborhood.
The next time you find yourself in Shibuya — one of modern-day Tokyo’s most energetic and pulsating neighborhoods — you may, at some point, find yourself craving a moment of peace (and quiet).
While there are many wonderful things about Shibuya — not least of which is its immediate proximity to so many of my favorite Tokyo neighborhoods! — it is not typically a place I will seek out when I am in need of a bit of dignified calm.
Yet just steps from the never-ending buzz of Shibuya Station itself (also home to the irresistible Tokyu Food Show depachika), on a small side street off of Meiji-dori, you can’t help but forget the outside world as you settle in at the counter of Chatei Hatou (Google Map).
If you are looking for a quick jolt of caffeine, you’ve come to the wrong place.Chatei Hatou specializes in the gracious art of preparing the perfect cup of coffee.
They also bring the same loving care to everything they do, including nostalgia-inducing sandwiches, and gorgeous cakes.
Tokyo, and Japan in general, is home to more than its fair share of incredible coffee shops, but a visit to Chatei Hatou is about much more than the coffee (which is outstanding, by the way).
As with all great specialty shops, Chatei Hatou excels in every detail, and an hour savoring the coffee and atmosphere leaves you refreshed and recharged.
