It’s Andres, from Boutique Japan.
This month’s postcard comes from the tiny village of Tsumago.
Reporting from Japan, where we — the Boutique Japan team — have just completed our first-ever Team Retreat in Japan.
We are still a relatively young company, having been founded just over three years ago (in late 2013).
And, while we are a close-knit bunch, we don’t usually have the chance to all spend time together in person, since we are a globally-distributed “virtual” team (it is 2017, after all!).
So this team trip was an amazing opportunity for us to spend time together, have fun and get to know one another better, while simultaneously immersing ourselves completely in Japan.
As you might expect, we had the chance to travel to some beautiful places (specifically Tokyo, Tsumago, Kyoto, Naoshima, and Hakone).
A key part of our travels involved checking out some incredible hotels and ryokans (one of the “hardest” parts of our “job”), as well as meeting up with several of our favorite guides and specialists throughout the country (which often involves the hardship of eating wonderful food and drinking amazing sake).
Holding in-person events like this is essential, particularly for companies like ours, since we don’t usually have the benefit of working and playing together, in person. There are so many benefits to being globally distributed, but the benefits of spending time together — in person — are also huge.
We’ve come out of this trip closer to one another, even more knowledgeable about this endlessly fascinating country, and with ideas and inspiration for the future of Boutique Japan!
